Week in Progress

I had a WIP today with Louise, Dereck and Chris. I brought in some of the work i did over easter, this being, my 2 A1 scale collages and some pattern making involving shoes.

Chris

Chris's advice today has in a way changed the format of my idea. Instead of creating an A5 sized flyer. He suggested i go big for more of an impact, this being an A2 scale book - to show off my collages more effectively.

With the type of fashion illustration i am creating, chris made the point that this will help me when i come to making a move in my career. That by doing a large scale book like this i can send this off to art directors in the future and hopefully show them the wow factor too.

Dereck

The one remark that i kindof argree with and has stuck in my head from dereck is how he has always said he loves the way i use collage in my work, but i need to step my work up about 3 gears to gain full pretential.

He suggested i work directly onto newspaper. ontop of dress patterns and experiment with carbon paper and tinted pens as to try intigrate my collage and line together more.

Refering back to my Timetable

Its two weeks away from our presentation hand in, and i thought i would be a crucial time to see whether im on track to having everything done with enough time.

Looking at the timetable given to us

  • For the 3 weeks of easter it specifies 'proceeding with my final outcome'
  • and this week of the 25th April - specifies that by now i should be 'considering layout and composition of my final end result'.
Looking at my own personal timetable i drew up for myself
  • Week 13 (easter) - i have put 'get layout preperations started, with current illustrations'
  • Week 14 - Get suficiant drafts completed and get feedback.
I have a week in progress meeting at 10am on thursday booked with johnny, and by the looks of what is on both timetables i need to really concentrate on getting my layout designs (a variation) sorted by then. So later on today i need to do atleast 4 thumbnail drawings of the layout of my flyer - what will be on each page? e.g. where will the information for this fashion / boutique event go? and what theme and style will i have for each page?

Textures

In the image above is a few found / scanned in textures that i plan to use (mainly on the back on my flyer) as a back drop behind / amongst my illustrations... to create more interest and depth.

Applying these textures

Here i have used a combination of two of my found textures, the 1st layer being the all over colour and detail, and a second used as creating that faint boarder (opacity reduced right down - as to create a suble difference in colour towards the center of the image).

Editing

Today i have been scanning in and preparing some of my illustrations on photoshop, which i can then print off in the libary tomorrow for development.

Here i have been playing around with the colour and textures behind this simple shoe pattern i've drawn (They consist of a few of my own shoes and others that i have copied from magazines).
For the back pages of my flyer, i am considering keeping it simple, this directly links the the theme of obsession and excess.

Above i have displayed a page layout that would answer the question "what are your obsessions". This layout and idea is more fanzine look inspired - how it involves the general public with their guilty pleasures and obsessions when it comes to clothes shopping ("what are you obsessed with buying?") ... here i intend on asking people like my housemates to what my own guilty pleasures are when i go out shopping.

Plans for tomorrow

  • Scan in some larger scale images at uni
  • Experiment with block colour and textures as a backdrop to some images (edit on photoshop)
  • Print off a selection of already existing work - to collage with
  • Get some A1 sheets of paper, so its easier to play around with layout designs
  • locate some text online that i could include within my page layout designs (designer lists, times, discount on clothing maybe) - good place to start is existing fashion shows and boutiques (such as London Fashion Weekend).

Poster

I have been looking at a womens form for one of my poster idea's - to give me an idea on what type of suiluette i want to create - does it have enough movement around the page? negitive space? etc.

Type

For a while now i have been watching 'House gift' on itv, always thinking that the type (as shown above), is very interesting and effective.

Things i could addapt to letters, as to carry on my set theme of 'obessions' and 'posessions'
  • Items of clothing and footwear (linking to when i asked a few friends what their guilty pleasures where when it comes to shopping).
  • Boutique style furniture (being simular to what is currently used in the house gift type) - this being of antique stlye.
  • To keep within the spring theme - Flowers or birds

1st Poster.

This image that i have made previously, will be one of my poster designs. One thing that i will probably do is implinment in some typography (play around with the idea).

Flyer design rethink

I found this flyer inside a dvd that i have recently bought, this is a very effective way to combine the details of my event... alongside nice poster to keep - on your wall or by the computer.

When it comes to presenting my work in our degree show, i am going to have 2 posters on the wall in frames, and this idea of a flyer to show where one of the two posters would be printed. Meaning that two types of flyers would hyperthetically be printed out.

Below is a simple layout design, that i am planning on putting into action. In the image to the right; shows a plan for one of the posters that i will be creating for the inside of this flyer idea. The background colour will be a dark grey - type of charchol. with one figure in the middle, with plently of negative space (a contrast from the busy collage that will be the advertising side of things.

The second poster will be a collection of items all in a pile (to go along with the idea of possesions and obsessions) from shoes to  accessories.

further idea's

The week just gone has been pretty slow paced when it comes to work i have produced, but i feel by playing around with some of my work already produced, i can change something i probably disgarded when it comes to creating my flyer to something i want to work around.
When i'm back in Southampton i will have my scanner and printer to my disposal, i'm staying at my parents for another week, so from now on i am going to be working on simple collages and thumbnails for layout. Giving me that direction for when im back and can produce a more professional and finish draft.

The above drawing of catwalk models, were done back at the beginning of this project... but from taking this photograph of the page outside of my garden table, i have found more of an interest towards this image.
Not only has this drawing been transormed from a simple line drawing with abit of texture, but the photograph has created more of a 3 dimentional appearence - these figures are walking towards you , and out of the page, i definatly am going to contribute this to one of my drafts, in hope to narrow down the work i want to include within my final piece.

Page layout expeiment

In the above two images, i have been carrying on with the process of transforing my found images, into simple yet strong collages.

Stage one on how i would begin to use these collages - either used on the far right end page of my constatina, or inbetween 2 pages, linking them together. I will show this clearly at a later date, in rough thumbnail layout sketches.

Simple Collage

This doublepage spread i found in a free magazine for the clothing shop topshop. This type of layout would be appropriate for a page of my flyer, by being a current, contemporary editorial layout.

I have found these old fashioned images in the magazine Vice, to edit over, with anything from more magazine cuts, photographs and mark making. I dont want these very detailed, so perhaps a few block colours and repetative simple patterns worked over the top would give it the desired look.

These are an example of the type of work i would include in the editoral layout, shown at the top of this post.

layout / draft 2

In the two images above, i have started to play around with the format of how i will eventually produce my end piece. This unlike my 1st draft is simply more exploration on content for my flyer, this experimentation is more about how each page will look (after current inspiration from magazines and flyers i have come across) and how i can impliment type amongst all this... as the wrong placing and font can ruin the whole illustration.

Experimenting with Type

The first two A5 pages you see on this constatina, were mainly influenced by the work of Gemma Lamimer... her simple use of collage in general is the type of this i feel my work is appropriate alongside... to keep within my theme of 'minamalism' and that of a contempory style.

The second A5 pages, to the right, are genrally my standard method of including text with my illustrations. I'm not going to disguard these just to try something different, i know they compliment my work, and by drawing out the alphabet, this will save me time drawing out all the text within my piece (if i choose to use this design).

On the reverse of this constatina, is my start to a rough second draft ... Here is an example of some of the other type i am going to experiement with, as my work is boutique inspired etc, vintage type would fit in with the theme perfectly.

When i'm back in Southampton, in about a weeks time, i am going to scan this alphabet i have drawn... to see whether its the type i will be using for the text i want big on my flyer.

Drawing with magazine cuttings

Over the last few days i have been working on simple ink and fineliner drawings that are collaborated with magazine textures and patterns (often dress's from a selection of magazines that im subscribed to.

In this image i have applied some cut up fabric to add towards this being more of a collage.

typography inspirations

To develop my work abit further at this stage, i have decided to start working on hand made typography. On doing this i see it as an oportunity to carry along some markmaking exploration around the type, thus figuring out what style will best go with my imagry.
The first illustrator that i am researching is that of eduardo recife, a "brazilian artist/illustrator, graphic designer and typographer. Recife’s illustrations have a characteristic vintage feel and an old-era style, while his favourite working media include pencil, paint, computer, photography and collages".

What Eduardo Recife has done in these images, is combine a strong vintage style of type, to go hand in hand with his image making, therefor making his work stronger, keeping up continuity throughout all aspects.

The one thing that i am very definate on, is that i want to design and create my type for this project by hand (to keep in the collage / markmaking style of mine). Seeing as i am doing work in a boutique style, there are usually vintage aspects involved with a twist of the modern, i will have to figure out a way in which i can achieve this to the best of my ability with some further research.

Gemma Latimer

Gemma Latimer has enjoyed a successful run of editorial, advertising and music commissions. More recently she has created a range of products for retail including illustrated bags, badges, cards and screen-printed artwork. Her work has that feel of the girly and Vintage about it, relating to my own asperations for this project.

All her work is handmade (alot of use from the photocopier) with the odd tweak on the computer towards the final stages of a project. This in itself i find very inspirational, as all my work i produce is handmade, you appreachiate it that much more i feel.

Farnham artshop

Today i took a trip to Farnham, to get some more suplies for this project; in hope to get more motivated in creating further drafts ... which in process will iron out some of the kinks in my work.

I bought several different textures of paper and some new paintbrush's to get the ball rolling.

Illustration Catalogue Blurb

Gemma Quelch is an illustrator whose work is generally hand drawn and handmade.  Her work is often that of mixed media, using anything from fabric and magazine cut-outs to paint and Quink ink.
The two images shown here are a good example of how she mix’s hand drawn images with other textures and mediums. Gemma’s Work produced is  very fashion inspired from the likes of magazines and TV advertising.
Some of her influences include; Rebecca Kitchin, My Dead Pony and Robert Rauschenberg.

Still life

Today i have been out in the garden, working on pattern making by drawing some of the flowers etc. To impliment into my final design - maybe placeing it in there by putting the oppacity on low or as a block square (with a drawn frame around) over the top of the rest of my flyer.

A1 Sheet

Carrying on drawing on the same A1 sheet, i have further explored with type, and thinking of words that i could include in my final piece that links in with the theme of 'Obsession'... In this image i have begun to impliment the word 'excess' into the drawn aspect. As i want all the type to be part of my designs - apposed to layered in after.

Here are a couple of images, where i have continued to explore typography and ways to integrate it into some designs i will be experiementing with, when i start to do some more drafts for my flyer.

(In the above image) i will definatly be using this saying within my final outcome, it reads 'Obsession can lead to style, success and originality'.

A1 Sheet

To get more of a feel about the form and design of my constatina flyer, i have started doing some drawing and collage onto an A1 sheet. By working on a larger scale there is more freedom to get more detail, and allows me to crop into some area's that i would like to use in my final design.

The images that i am creating now, i hope to use in my end design. When it actually comes to producing my flyer and possibly posters, i will be scanning images that i have already created, and will be creating up untill nearer my deadline.
