Refering back to my timetable

Looking back our timetable provided to us at the beginning of this project, it is stating that i should be well underway in developing some of my idea's and pieces... at this point in time i can say that to a certain extent i have been doing this, but if im honest i dont think i have nearly enough development work or sketches.

The timetable states that next week is when we should be exploring idea's further and carrying on with development stages, i need to catch up abit here i feel, as to gain more of an idea of what direction my projects going in.

3rd Floor (issue 2 from uni) 'Obsessions'

Not knowing this magazine has been laying around my lounge for about 2 months, i started reading Solents 3rd Floor magazine, this issue having the title 'Obsessions'

Some points that i scribbled down were;
  • "As the Calvin Klein avert states 'Between love and madness lies Obsession'
  • An Obsession with fashion is, a lack of control... kind of love, yet earning of the side of madness
  • Shoes and accessories are the fashion obsession of today.

London Fashion Weekend

Seeing as i am creating a fashion based advertisment event, i decided that i needed get more of a feel of a yearly organised show. London Fashion Weekend is held at somerset house - Covent Garden, This in itself gives the show a very grande and upmarket atmosphere. The sole purpose i felt was to buy your way in to get great discounts on designer gear, to see the catwalk and all the extra's would easily set you back another £30 - £50 each.
What i gained from today was a list of independent and mainstream designers that caught my eye, looking at the way they presented their pieces and a few of them talking me through the proccess they go through to make their items - providing me an idea to develop on when looking at the content i could involve in my work.

Above is a couple of photos that i took whilst at the fashion show, i thought this an interesting use of fabric hung from a high ceiling.. these images show a good view of depth, that i could experiement with fabric that i have purchased from charity shops.

Self Promo

Today i have been creating my Self Promotion artwork, that i will be posting later on today to Peter.
For the format of my piece i have chosen to take the approach of presenting my work as an A5 postcard.

I have used an image from this Current project ... Ive kept to my genral style by keeping it simple and fresh (in both senses when it comes to colour and movement about the image), with a slight collage style showing through. i have decided to do the typography on the front the way i have shown, because it keeps the whole continuity of the image together,

This design is easy and cheap to be printed out many times over.

Pattern making

Whilst out shopping, these gift cards really caught my eye, and sparked up new idea's of making a pattern of my own to link with some other images that i'm working on ... these illustrations are a little bold and child like, but i am definatly going to take on this concept, by experimenting with my own style.

Guest Lecturer, Michael

The guest lecturer today presented a few of his pubished and work in progress pieces. His process of working was that of print making, his work striked me as very bold, but by the sounds of it also very expencive to keep reproducing!

Unlike some of the other lecturers, Michael was only out of education for a year or two... giving us more of an idea of what exactly to expect when we finish our degrees and go into the world of being a professional Illustrator. One thing that was very much the same as some advice we've been told, was that builing up the one style that we deem what we do best, and built on it as best as you can. to make a successful portfolio and to be known for what makes you, you.

Alongside to emailing / posting your work to art directors, he made a big point of making yourself known by networking at openings as much as you can.

Proposal Tutorial with Derek

To go with my style of using magazine cuttings combined with ink drawings, Derek suggested that i work on existing magazines (such as vogue and glamour), to make them my own and subject them by working on top of them - Taking pages from these high end fashion magazines that are very glossy and finely finished, to something more edgey and almost have a fanzine type appearence.

This could include sketching into the pages, changing around their existing text to something relevent to my subject matter of excess and indulgences and cutting out and using / replacing my drawings.

He also suggested that i look up
  • Graham Rownthwaiye
  • The book; Fashion Illustration Now Vol 1
  • Collage artists / illustrators such as Robert Rauchenberg
  • Riot in old street
  • Virgin in flight magazine (shoes Illustration)
  • Fanzines (e.g Punk Fanzines)

Rebecca Kitchin

For a long time now i have been strongly insfluenced by the workes of the fashion Illustrator Rebecca Kitchin. She mainly creates her work via painting over photographs, drawing into them and creating layers with paint. She is famous for work that she sold to be window designs to the department store Debenhams.

Style

The style in which i work best and will be working in throughout my FMP is that of Mixed Media, being a very contemorary mixture of ink drawings, watercolour, acrylic paint, magazinge cuttings etc.

Some Illustrators that i am influenced by are Rebbeca Kitchin, bla bla bla ..... (write more. n add images)

Guilty Pleasures. Editorial or Advertising?

To kickstart my project i have been doing sketches revolving around the primary idea of doing some work around the idea of 'Guilty Pleasures'.. expanding this into the area of excess and different peoples pocessions and collections (this being a study on anything to what individuals buy in a low time, for example junk food.. or what makes them tick - music / clothing style / interests).

From developing this idea, of taking the more editorial route i have dicided its time to cut from this end outcome completly ... at 1st i was very attracted to going down the advertising of a fashion event too dounting, but now believe that this would push me more in the area of what i really want to do, even after uni ... making my FMP more challenging yet something that will keep me interested and hopefully show my full potential.
