Identity Wall

Today we all got together to carry out the task of creating an identy wall for our degree show bookcover, this consited of what work inspired us and some of our own work. Today was all about sorting out what jobs we would individually do when it comes to the opening of our degree show, i signed up for helping sort out the bar for our opening... other jobs included advertising of the show (design and production), invites and bag designs. Above is the identity wall in its early stages where people have begun to stick and draw their work directly ont the wall.

The end result looked like this, areas will be blown up and scaled for parts of our identity book, this was a simplier effective way to ensure everyone who took part was involved with the production of our degree show product. The work that i put up i thought portrayed my style; from being very collage like (below). this being a double page spread from the book 'Selfish Giant'.

End of year photo's

Whilst sorting out the identiy wall, we were set certain times through the day to get a photographe of the whole year and a black and white headshot done - to go alongside our images and catalogue blurb in the end of degree book. Today was very relaxed and fun and all about how we can make our show look great.
After today it has really sunk in that there isnt much time left untill all this planning is put into action. Therefore not a great deal of time for me to pull everything outof the bag and pull all my efforts together.

Life Drawing

Taking louises advice of getting a different perspective on drawing people from life, i have done a selection of quick sketches on my own and my housemates legs.

Still life drawings, done to aid my initial idea of following the theme of possions.

Some life drawing whilst out in the sun.

Degree Show presentation with Johnny Hannah

In Johnny's presentation, there was alot said that was pretty much the same as the tutorial i had with Peter yesterday, when the methods of mounting work were concerned.

The main point of the presentation today, was to show us a few exibitions from the previous years.
There seems to be a big variety of options out there with what we can achieve from our show, from window paintings to work presented in belljars. But today has just comfirmed that i will be going for the cleancut white frames, hung spiradically around my area of wall.

Degree Show Workshop - Presenting my work.

Today we were split into two groups (one in the morning and one in the afternoon), I went in in the afternoon to the printroom. Where peter was demonstrating to us easy and effective ways of mounting and presenting our work for our degree show.

This demonstration was very helpful, as i have now 100% decided that im going to organise to have a plynth for my constitina flyer final piece. And have a couple of frames purchaced from ikea for my poster idea's (being of the size of A3 or A2)

Fashion show sketches

Although i probably wouldnt use any of these sketches for my final imagery, i feel like i have gained something from sketching people like this, giving a change from drawing from magazines and photos all the time.

Burlesque fashion event at Orange Rooms

As part of my housemates FMP on fashion and makeup styling course, she set up a burlesque fashion event at the local bar on bedford place Orange Rooms. Above is a couple of images from the burlesque acts that performed throughout the event, but the main theme of the show was underwear as outerwear... where all her models had caprice underwear fitted and walked the catwalk set up in the bar.
I saw this as a good oportunity to get some primary sketches of some of the girls walking the catwalk.

How i plan to develop my draft from here...

  • Experiment with pattern and textures more
  • Look at fanzines and magazines for inspiration
  • impliment the fabric and habidasheries (such as buttons)
  • Add more depth into the image - in this draft the images are very 2D, not much layering going on.

Refering back to my set timetable

Looking back to the week of the 14th, it states that i should be well under way with develping my idea and images by now. I feel i am a little bit behind at the moment, and need to pick up my game if i want to manage my time effectivley.

I have been putting into effect a few suggestions from a couple of the tutors, like drawing from life. This in itself has helped me with the posisions and manirisums in the way people hold themselves.

Draft 1

I have selected a few of my best designs i have been working on the last couple of months, to create a basic idea of what my final piece will look like - this is it in its most basic form. But by doing this i can get a feel of what is working and how i can develop it over the next few months.

Art sale!

Yesterday the class held an art sale outside the IT Resource Centre in the Andrews Building. It proved to be a success and they raised about £100. Our budget is now £886.72!

Collaging Fabric

Charity shop and habidasiory shopping

Following Louise's advice i went out and purchased some items of clothing, that i thought had interesting textures and patterns - aswell as most of them having the right colour scheme that i have set myself.

My plan is to have a play around with these different fabrics, via doing collages and including them within some of my future drawings.

I also thought it would be usefull to acquire some background patterns to work on top of, and because my budget is pretty tight at the moment i went into local shops such as laura ashley and asked for a variety of wallpaper samples.

Linder Sterling - Artist Research

Linder Sterling was one of the artist's that Dereck Suggested for me to look at. I love the way these images combine old photography with simple collage aspects, and really think that this is a look i would like to explore more in the next couple of days, as vintage glamour is a big aspect that i want to involve.

Libary books

From the libary today i have borrowed the following books;
  • Hannah Hoch's -Cut with the kitchin Knife - Maud Lavin
  • Fashion Illustration Now
  • New Fashion Illustration
Hannah Hoch

Hannah Hoch ~Dada-Ernst,1920

I located and borrowed this book from the libary after Dereck recommended it to me, This is the type of collage that i will be experiementing with as it includes all the types of resourses (bar line drawings that i will add as extra) like stained paper, secondary images from the likes of magazines and photographs.

Fashion Illustration Now

"Tanabes drawings are often compared to traditional japanese woodcuts. His ink drawings are mechanically transformed so that they sometimes seem to blur or move across the page. he explains; 'my drawings are so flat and simple. That i try to give them a little more movement to put things off-register'."

New Fashion Illustration

Looking through this book, two illustrators in particular caught my eye, these are; Erin Petson and Jen Renninger.

Erin Petson

Erin Petson is said to take photos of her friends in these positions of women in her work, capturing lots of movement, interesting shapes and negative space through the process. I love how she then uses mixed media and collage to create depth.

Jen Renninger

I am mainly interested by the work of Jen Renninger because of her use of texture and pattern. This image to me is a great example of this. And i hope to gather patterns from the likes of wallpaper samples to my own hand made patterns that directly link to my theme of 'Obsessions' and 'Guilty Pleasures'.

Tutorial with Louise

The same day i had my tutorial with Dereck i had sighned myself in for a tutorial with Louise, she too had some different and interesting idea's for me to explore more into. these being;
  • To draw from life more, when it comes to people and shop displays, jus for a different prespective.
  • Impliment the use of fabric within my work - have a look whats in oxfam and what i dont wear at home anymore, to cut up and use in a collage.
  • Paint over / Plaster a old dress, to use as material to draw on?
  • Trying drawing objects with other means, such as buttons for example
My next step from here is to purchase some items from a habiashery shop, such as buttons, lace and ribbon...  as i believe this is whats needed to make my piece come to life.

Tutorial with Dereck

When i got into the studio today i got Dereck to look over my work, and suggested i look at such work as:

  • Linder Sterling collages (70's/80's)
  • Buzzcocks Single: orgasm addict (linder)
  • Richard Hamilton
  • Hannah Hoch - Cut out with a kitchin knife (book)
Some other comments that i hope to explore more were such things as;
  • experiment with ink and paint more - layering effect?
  • Try concentrating on the outline of a figure, apposed to always drawing the model in question
  • Explore with faces in a more mixed media manor - for example do one eye with a layered effect of ink, paint and collage the other (the same applying for the lips and nose).

Developing my idea's

These drawings are my instant idea's for, your possesions owning you.

A mixture of guilty pleasures (cigerettes) and beginning to touch on the idea of obsession, with all the shoes (a pile of my own shoes to draw).
